Welcome to Room 1's Wiki page

Your teachers are Mrs Watson and Miss Stevens. Miss Stevens is in class on a Monday, Thursday and Friday afternoon. We will pop things up onto the wiki page for you to see what we have been getting up to. We hope you enjoy looking at them.

Here are some helpful things you may need to know;

  1. Our Library day is Monday, children need to bring back their library book on this day to return it to the library and get another book out.
  2. We have Junior Assembly every 2nd week on a Friday afternoon.
  3. We take our book bags home every day. Inside these are notices and sometimes work we can keep at home.
  4. On Monday - Thursday we take home a reader - please let us practise reading this to/with you at night. We always take our notebook home too - please sign this to show we have read our book with you.
  5. Inside our book bag is also our spelling list, please help us to learn the words of the week.
  6. On a Friday we take home our poetry book. This is a great book that the children can read to/with you over the weekend. It comes back to school on Monday and stays at school in the poetry box until it goes home again on Friday.

NEWS FLASH!!!!

This morning at around 8:00am a truck came into school to deliver books for the library. The truck was so big that it smashed into one of the tree branches on the tree at the front entrance. Mr Davies needed to cut the branch off so that it was safe again for everyone at school. Mr Davies got a long ladder and a red saw, he climbed the ladder and he chopped the tree branch down.

A Visit from the police!

At school for the last couple of weeks we have had some time with Constable Jamieson. He came to talk to us about safe walking.
In the first lesson we learnt how to cross the road by looking both ways. In the second lesson we went across the crossing and for a little walk down the road, on the lookout for 'sneaky driveways'. In the last lesson we learnt about being safe in the car, using our seatbelts and managing our impulsivity - that way we won't distract the driver. There are some great photos of us in the police cars. Check out our individual Wikis to see us.

Life Education Caravan Visits

Room 1 got to visit the Life Education Caravan. We went for 2 visits inside the huge container on wheels that was parked by the hall. Inside we met Harold the giraffe who was very cool! During our visit we learnt all about what our bodies need, things like shelter, love, food, and water. It was an exciting time going into the dark container, and so much fun. One of our favourite parts was learning the song 'mash the banana'.

Cross Country

Yippee, finally it stopped raining on a Tuesday and we were able to have our first ever Cross Country. We had been practising during Term 3, trying to build up our strength and stamina. Some good tips for helping us be 'better than before' was to jog at the start and when we got to the last corner make sure we tried our best to finish strong! Here is a great photo of us just before we went to race down on the field.

Mrs Watson and Miss Stevens were really proud of all of us, all the practise had paid off, we all made it! Room 1 even had some placings;
Girls Boys
Lexi 2nd Garcenia 1st
Sophie 3rd

Have you seen...

Our wonderful woodworking table? We had a chat with Mr Davies and explained to him that we would like to be able to hammer, saw, unscrew and lots more and we wondered if he could help us. Sure enough Mr Davies was able to help. He found an old cupboard with wheels, added a top, found some tools, nails and even a small vice. We love using the woodworking table during developmental time, it is so much fun to be able to work with wood and tools. Mr Davies is such a clever man, we love him!

Life Education Caravan

We had fun today at the caravan. We wish we could come every day. We liked doing the puzzle about our bodies and what our bodies need. Harold the Giraffe was very cute and his movie was great. His movie taught us how to be safe and play nicely with our friends.

The unwelcome visitor

Today we found a visitor at our door after break one. Some of us were happy with him, some were not. We decided to catch him, have a good look at him and then set him free into the garden. This actually turned out to be a little difficult. Who was going to take the lid off?

The America's Cup

In Room 1 we have been watching some of the America's Cup! We love watching the fast boats and really hope that we can win! Here we are with Room 7!

The Athon

For those of you who are unaware - each year Royal Oak Primary has an 'athon'. It's a fabulous day, filled with fun activities all day based around the athon theme for that year. There is always a quiz as part of the athon - children are encouraged to try and get sponsorship for the quiz. The school uses the money raised to help support the learning programmes.

This year we are having a 'kiwiathon'. The children all have the list of questions (and answers) if you could try and read them with them, discuss some of them, that would be fabulous. We are also looking at them during class time ( a couple each day). It is not expected for children in year 0 to learn the questions and answers off by heart.

Each class has a town or city which they have been assigned. Room 1's is Franz Joseph. On the day (Wednesday 4th September) we would like the children to come to school dressed to represent the town. We have chosen to dress looking like hikers as the town is famous for hikers and sightseers visiting the glacier. If children could wear shorts, knee high socks and walking type shoes (sneakers), that would be great. If they can also wear hat, gloves and a scarf if you have one. We will wear our backpacks on the parade, to look like rucksacks. There is no need to purchase anything for this day, just make the best out of what you have.

We will post some pictures soon of the activities during the day.

Making Playdough

We had language experience today. This is where we go and make or do or explore something. We then talk lots about it, building up our vocabulary. We all enjoyed measuring, mixing and then squishing the playdough. We wrote some stories about this too and they are the first stories that are in our writing folders. You can read our published stories anytime you like Mums and Dads. Come into Room 1 and find the class library. This is where we keep our own books that we have made. They have all of our stories in them.

A special visit

We were extremely lucky that today the ladies who have the reading dogs had some spare time. They came to visit our class. These ladies and their georgeous dogs come once a week and they listen to some children read stories to them. All of the children got to have a turn reading to the dogs. We were super duper lucky.

Our First Show

Today we were really lucky. We went to the hall to watch our first show. It was so much fun we had to sing chants with actions. The lady who taught us had beautiful bright clothes on.

Book Week 19 - 23 August

This week was book week at school. We were reading the story' Walking in the Jungle' as our big book. As our activity this week we had our first drama lesson. We acted out the play. It was really fun, see if you can find us in the play.

We had a really great time at the book parade. All of Room 1 looked great dressed as animals. Watch out for the animal catcher!

Developmental Time

One of our afternoon activities is developmental. This is when we socialise, learn to share, take turns. We use lots of our Oral Language skills to communicate. It's a great time for us to develop our imagination and explore new ideas. Some of our developmental activities are; Sand, Water, Playdough, Home Corner, Shop, Construction, Craft and lots lots more. Check out some of the activities we have been busy with so far.

Our first few weeks at school

We started our first day with six and we are up to twelve in Room 1 already! Have a look at some of the fun things we have been getting up to!

We have been learning about plants and how things grow. We spent last Friday morning with Room 7 and Mrs McConnell planting some of our very own lettuce and carrot seeds. We had lots of fun making our own pots out of newspaper, and filling them with soil around in the school garden before we put them into the greenhouse! We can't wait to see how they grow.
